At the May 19, 2025 school board meeting, Smith spoke during open forum sharing his opinion about district finances and stated that the district does not have “an expense problem, it is a revenue problem.” What does this mean for citizens of PLSAS if he is elected? It means that he will be likely to support another outrageous levy ask, he will be less likely to question the need for expenses when they are presented to the board and he is very likely to rubber stamp any and every financial request because “it is not an expense problem, it is a revenue problem.” There is some irony that comes from the support he has received from the teachers union. The same union that is upset with voters that have elected down the past two levies that were presented to the public with less than clear itemization. The same union that collects annual dues from each of its members and allocates $25-30 from each teacher toward election funding. Which explains the multiple flyers arriving at households on the same day because “it is not an expense problem, it is a revenue problem.” As any parent knows, it is easy to spend someone else’s money. (Insert dad voice explaining that “money doesn’t grow on trees.”) The union spending money to send multiple flyers to households using a portion of union members dues is one example of this. Another example is how donation money is spent by candidates during their campaigns. A candidate is expected to raise donations and then use that money wisely to get the word out to voters about their platform. Surprisingly, the Smith campaign has spent an enormous amount of time complaining about Jon Conlon’s enormous signs but somehow Smith has managed to spend almost TRIPLE what Jon Conlon has on signs. Then, you can see that Smith has spent almost 4 TIMES the amount on shirts/apparel that Jon Conlon has. This begs the question: is this type of spending really necessary? Or is this just wasteful spending? But remember, “it is not an expense problem, it is a revenue problem.” If you are looking for leadership that will spend responsibly, work collaboratively and bring transparency to our district. The choice is clear. VOTE FOR JON CONLON
Many of Smith’s volunteers and campaign team are members of the local Indivisible group that supports the “No Kings” protests.
What if we told you that campaign tactics were overheard being shared by none other than former progressive school board member Michael Nelson.

We have all heard the accusations fly about our school district not supporting parental rights. These concerns have been described as the choice to mask our children, distance vs. in-person learning, curriculum transparency and gender identity. These topics have been spoken about repeatedly over the past 14 months at school board meetings, discussed at length in many online forums and most recently, brought up in the Superintendent Listening and Learning tours. The district has given varied responses to concerned parents and many of them lack substance and are unsatisfactory. This is why Lakers4Change was born. Many of the parents that are involved in our group were unknown to each other before summer of 2021. Many of these parents found each other at school board meetings after they spoke about concerns. Some of these parents even reached out through the website when they learned what this group stood for. We support the rights of parents to protect their children. A PLSAS data request was recently received and forwarded to our group after a parent reached out informing us that they were having trouble getting confirmation from the school board and district administration about policy in regards to gender identity bathroom and locker room usage. This parent claims that it took two weeks of email exchanges for the district to verify that gender identity determines what facilities a student uses. What does this mean? Well, in the last Superintendent Listening and Learning tour, Dr. Michael Thomas allegedly stated that “girls use girls bathrooms and boys use boys bathrooms.” But, this is where the district is not clear. According to the data request sent to us, in an email from the district’s MARSS Coordinator, in the Infinite Campus explanation under “Legal Name and Gender Fields”, The legal name and gender fields are available to differentiate from names by which the person wants to be referred (not a nickname) and their legal name and gender record (that which is on the person’s birth certificates). For example, persons who are transgender may prefer to keep that information as private as possible. District and school staff will need to know this information, maybe even teachers; but for the most part, the majority of the school staff and students would not have any reason to know a transgender person is enrolled at the school. The majority of the school staff and students would not have any reason to know a transgender person is enrolled at the school. This explains why Dr. Thomas is “technically” telling the truth. If a student IDENTIFIES as a different gender than what they are born as, they are what they identify as and therefore, “girls use girls bathrooms and boys use boys bathrooms.” Per the parent that reached out regarding their interaction with the district on policy about gender identity and bathroom/locker room use, the district did not offer a policy other than the Equity and Inclusion Resolution and this MN court case. Perhaps, because our district doesn’t have a policy but rather a procedure? Many parents do not realize that a policy must be immediately available online but procedures do not. That is another area that presents transparency concerns for parents. Policy may state one thing and procedures may dictate another and these procedures may not be easily accessible or known to parents. (see the email below where it states “Our district is working on a “procedure” rather than a policy to address this issue.” The issue being legal name and gender identities on Infinite Campus.) There has been much speculation and concern among parents regarding children being allowed to identify differently at school and parents not being informed. This has not yet been verified but is a hot button topic on both the news and social media. The ethical argument being, who’s right is it to decide whether to support gender identity changes in children? The parents? If not the parents, then who? Several email exchanges were found in the PLSAS data request sent to us that support these parents’ concerns. For example, Image 1, a Google Form given to students that asks questions such as If you have a preferred name, what is it? Followed by the answer options, With everyone/When I speak to your family/When I speak to other teachers, but not your family/In class in front of other students, but not any adults/Only one-on-one. These answer options were also available for the question, If your pronouns do not match the sex on your school records, when should I use them? This would suggest that parents are not being fully informed of what is going on with their children when at school. Or does it? Some of the emails show correspondence between teachers and staff and indicate that parents are indeed not being informed of their children’s gender and name identity discrepancies when they are at school. In fact, one email in particular shows that some teachers are actually uncomfortable with the ask to use a student’s preferred pronouns and name at school but not when communicating with the parents. This type of activity without the parent or guardian’s knowledge is unethical at best. Why would secrets be kept from a child’s own family? Why would teachers be asked to lie? Where do we as parents and guardians draw the line and even if we draw a line, does that line mean anything to the adults that are responsible for our precious children? And finally, to confirm that the current board and administration is complicit in these types of procedures, listen to incumbent Enrique Velazquez from the October 12th candidate forum in Savage. He states that the district will honor the request of children that identify differently, “it’s not necessarily a parent decision that that comes forward, however, those decisions, by policy, are made by that individual . . . from the moment they get onto the bus, to the moment that they get back home.” If there was any reason for Michael Nelson to “worry,” itContinue reading “Uncovered truths.”
Hypocrisy In a recent posting on a Facebook page named “Citizens of Prior Lake,” a member of the group allegedly was asked to share a statement by Dr. Dan Edwards, PLSAS Director of Teaching and Learning. Lakers4Change would like to respond to his letter, please read to the end. The statement reads as follows, Weighing in on the school board elections. Posting on behalf of my good friend Dr. Dan Edwards. Dan is a lifelong resident of Prior Lake and respected educator in the district: Laker Pride is Alive and Well As a lifelong resident of Prior Lake for over 50 years, a PLHS graduate, and a professional educator serving the Prior Lake-Savage Area School District as a teacher, coach, and administrator for the past 29 years, I feel compelled to address the residents of our school district via this forum, as we head to the polls on November 8th. Throughout my time as a resident, parent, and educator within our school district, I have refrained from engaging in political banter or online community forums, instead choosing to spend my time serving in a professional capacity during the day and as a volunteer coach on evenings and weekends. It is through these experiences that I have had the privilege to see amazing opportunities and accomplishments the youth of our community experience day in and day out, true Laker Pride. First and foremost, I want to share my perspective that as a result of the tireless and amazing efforts of our current school board and over 1300 employees of PLSAS, our students are thriving. Do we have areas where we need to continue to improve so that all of our students experience high levels of success throughout our system? We most certainly do! Is our school district committed to striving for excellence in all that we do? I can assure you that we are! This is precisely why I have never been more proud to be a Laker! You might be asking yourself, why would I feel compelled to share my personal opinions in advance of the upcoming election? It is because of two recent flyers that I have received in the past few days that have me extremely concerned about the future path we could be heading down in our school district. The first flyer entitled, “For a Better Prior Lake,” and it included pictures and names of most of the Republican candidates running for state offices as well as pictures and names of four school board candidates appearing to be running on the ‘Republican ticket’. The question this left me asking myself and a question I would encourage you to ask yourself as well, since when are local school board elections tied to our two-party political system? I must share that this causes me serious concern. As a former American government teacher, I can fully appreciate the complexities of our political system, and the benefits and challenges of a two-party system, but I am very concerned with how that currently appears to be influencing and dictating the elections of our local school board. It would be my hope that those making decisions for the benefit of our students MUST could put aside party politics and do what is truly in the best interest of students, not a political party! The second flyer that caused me concern was included as an insert in the October 29th edition of the Prior Lake American. This flyer identified “Your COMMON SENSE candidates” again with pictures and names of the same individuals included in the previously mentioned ‘Republican ticket’. It wasn’t the fact that these four candidates were listed together once again that concerned me, more importantly, it was the ‘promises’ that were listed at the top of the flyer, two of which I would like to address, specifically “Bring Back LAKER PRIDE” and “Empower Teachers”. Regarding the first, as I have stated above, I do not believe there is a need to ‘bring back’ Laker Pride, it is truly alive and well and based upon my study of the listed candidates, I have significant concerns about their willingness and ability to truly deliver on this ‘promise’. Similarly, in the case of the second promise, once again, based upon my study of the candidates, I have serious concerns that they actually intend to “empower”, I might even suggest that they may actually stifle our amazingly talented and dedicated teachers and staff. I want to assure you that Laker Pride is alive and well and I feel confident that this pride will continue into the future if we, the electorate make careful choices on November 8th by choosing candidates who truly want to help our school district achieve its mission, to educate all learners to reach their full potential as contributing members of our ever-changing global community. The school board candidates that I believe will be collaborative problem solvers and will support our amazing staff in their work to achieve this mission are Enrique Velazquez, Jessica Olstad, Michael Nelson, and Jonathan Drewes. Dan Edwards, Ed. D. The above statement is dripping with hypocrisy and it starts with the opening phrase “Laker Pride is Alive and Well”. Our Laker children have spent the past year being shamed for the sins of a few. They have endured protests, one where a firearm was brought onto school grounds by an outside agitator. They have had pep rallies replaced with “student voices” rallies. They have had a basketball season cancelled because of one student’s actions. They walk through hallways and into classrooms with walls covered with the word HATE. Is this what Laker Pride looks like? Is Laker Pride really alive and well? Next, it seems necessary to address his statement, “our students are thriving.” As a district administrator, how do prove this statement to be true? What is the data from which you draw this conclusion? According to the definition of THRIVE, it means to grow vigorously or progress toward or realize a goal despite of orContinue reading “See what’s trending…”
